On Friday August 23, Mrs. Richardson’s 1st and 3rd block American Literature class at ECHS celebrated  finishing The Crucible by brainstorming alternate endings to the story, dressing up like pilgrims, and eating cookies, popcorn, and other sweet treats.

The Crucible is a play by Arthur Miller set during the Salem witch trials of the 1690s, and it shows a very horrifyingly realistic depiction of the things going on during that time. “The Crucible is one of my favorite things to teach every year. I especially love getting to have a little bit of fun with it at the end of the unit!” explained Mrs. Richardson.

Many students in Mrs. Richardson’s class that were involved in the activity thoroughly enjoyed the teaching. One student, Kyndall Metcalf, “I loved being able to work with my friends on a project about a book I enjoyed, with the bonus of having a snack while doing it!” Mrs. Richardson also offered extra credit to anyone who wore their pilgrim hats to their next class and took a selfie with another teacher.

The reading of the play helped show parallels with current times regarding the dangers that lies, misinformation, and mass hysteria can have on a society. The play gives its readers a real and almost shocking display of the insidiousness these themes possess. Throughout the lesson, students had a great deal of fun being able to collaborate with classmates and eat snacks while working. ECHS opens its arms to more fun class activities like this for teachers and students in the future, hoping to make this school year yet another amazing chance for growth and learning!
