This week Smoke Signals asked both teachers and students two questions:
What is one problem you see at our school that can be solved?
and
What is one good thing you love about ECHS?

Participants could answer either question or both. We, unsurprisingly, got some mixed responses, so let’s start with the positives!
Family & Fun

Almost every participant agreed on one thing: this school feels like one big family. Many people also mentioned the fact that there are virtually endless options for getting involved on campus.
Between clubs and electives offered at EC, every student can find something interesting to invest their time and energy in. Fun fact: did you know we have 60+ clubs on campus?
“Sports” was another common positive response. Students explained that they deeply enjoy both watching and participating in EC’s various athletic teams due to the excitement, entertainment, and school spirit involved.
Problems to Solve
Hallways
A common complaint, especially from teachers, was the tendency for there to be too many students wandering hallways during class. Hopefully as we all adjust to the Securley hall pass system, this will gradually improve.

Alternatively, many students complained about the excessive hallway traffic on some halls. While staggered bell times do help, the fact remains that thousands of students flood our hallways every 90 minutes, and each one has somewhere to be. The best advice is to avoid congested areas– like Longstreet and Brantley– whenever possible. If your path allows to take an outside route– take it!
Dress Code

Not surprisingly, many students had negative things to say about the school’s dress code. Students complained about the strictness of the school policies while teachers sometimes expressed that they were unsure which policies to enforce and when. Both asked for a reasonable middle ground on this issue.
Messes
When we asked janitors about what they perceived as their biggest problem, they overwhelmingly mentioned messes in bathrooms and outside lunch areas. These staff members work hard enough as it is, so we students just need to take care of our own messes to solve this one!
