ECHS’s Esports team has been has formed and begun training for upcoming competitions.
Esports includes the competitive playing of video games like Splatoon, Super Smash Bros., 2K, Madden, Mario Kart, and Rocket League. This week’s meeting on October 23 focused on Super Smash Bros.

Formerly coached by English Teacher Phillip Schultz, the team has a brand new coach this season: Science Teacher Brittany Howard.
Wednesday’s practice involved two teams, purple and gold, playing Super Smash Bros., which is a fighting game involving characters from Nintendo as well as other gaming companies. Team members explained that Smash Bros. has a good skill gap between learning all the characters and the match, but EC’s players really do bring out the joy inherent in the game.
It was nice to see friends hanging out at training together. Each player interviewed expressed an appreciation for gathering each Wednesday to play games they enjoy with friends that they’ve made along the way. One such member explained, “I enjoy being here because people have somewhat the same interests as me.”
One highlight was watching how quickly players bounce back after losses and continue to have fun. As one member reflected, “Success is not final and failure is not flat.” If you love to game, come check the team out and maybe learn something new!
