Halloween is just around the corner: a day when people dress up and enjoy spooky festivities like haunted houses, carving pumpkins, and trick-or-treating.

While Halloween is traditionally known for its scare factor, it seems that more people are focusing on the treats rather than the tricks. In the past, most costumes were scary, but nowadays, many costumes lean towards being cute and pretty.
Smoke Signals sent out a Google Form to approximately thirty students at ECHS, asking them to answer two questions. The first question asked whether their costume was cute or scary. The second question inquired about what they were going to be and what clothing items or accessories their costume included. The data collected from the Google Form is presented below:
For the descriptions of their outfits, the majority of participants will be wearing skirts, corsets, dresses, jewelry, and accessories specific to their costumes. Many of them are dressing up as fairies, witches, and princesses.
On social media, people complain that Halloween is losing its purpose of dressing up scary. Many girls are putting on corsets and skirts claiming to be a person they aren’t dressed similarly to in any way, and will receive backlash through comment sections and posts.
At the end of the day, people should allow others to dress however they want, regardless of tradition. It’s perfectly fine to be cute, scary, or funny on Halloween!
Be yourself and wear whatever makes you feel confident.
