Child’s Play: A Review

Child’s Play (1988) is a slasher film that kick started the story about a now-famous, killer doll named Chucky. Chucky is a “Good Guy” doll in a store where a killer named Charles Lee Ray did a ritual that moved his soul into Chucky after being shot by Detective Mike Norris.

Then we meet Andy, the protagonist in the film. He is a 6-year-old boy whose mom, Karen, works at a supermarket. Andy asks for a Good Guy doll for his birthday after seeing a commercial on tv, but so Karen buys one from a man on the street because she can’t afford to buy one from the toy store. Of course, the issue is that it wasn’t just a normal doll, it was the same doll that had the soul of Charles Lee Ray. Violence ensues as Charles, as Chucky the doll, starts to show his true colors.  Karen and Detective Norris must find a way to kill Chucky and save Andy before it is too late and Charles once again moves his soul into Andy.

Despite the movie’s age, Child’s Play tells an engaging and terrifying story with impressive special effects for the time period.  If you aren’t sure what to watch tonight at your Halloween party, give this cult classic a try!
