In the wake of Election Day, Smoke Signals asked 150 EC Students what they thought about the election of Donald Trump for a second term as president.
While just shy of half those surveyed expressed apathy toward the election, most citing an inability to vote or disapproval of both candidates, over half of students gave a confident opinion. About 35% said they were satisfied with the outcome, many showing excitement that their candidate had won. Of the 22.7% who were dissatisfied, spirits were more subdued on the whole, save for a vocal few dissidents.
“Extremely dissatisfied,” said one student, who asked to be counted ten times to account for how upset they were (they were counted only once, but their sentiment remains). “[Trump is] pushing for so much that doesn’t need to be pushed for,” said another.
For every malcontent, however, there was someone very pleased with the outcome, and enthusiastically responded to the surveyor. The student body here at East Coweta is made up of very diverse people with very diverse viewpoints, and no one view reigns supreme among those who had a stake in the election. Students who drove were impassioned about the issue of gas prices. LGBTQ+ students expressed concern about policy that could affect them depending on who becomes president. Many generalizations can and have been made about ECHS, but one thing that can’t be said is that we are homogenous.
