On Monday, Social Studies students attended this year’s annual Veteran’s Day Program in the Main Cafeteria to honor those who served in the Korean War and veterans among the faculty at ECHS.
The ceremony began with the presentation of the American flag by our ROTC students, followed by the singing of the national anthem. Next, three juniors who, over this past summer, visited Europe for the anniversary of D-Day, spoke about their travels to sites like Pointe du Hoc, the Normandy American Cemetery, and Dachau Concentration Camp. In attendance during this as the guest of honor was a veteran of the Korean War, 93 years of age.

Following the first speeches, the POW/MIA table was described and a moment of silence observed before a documentary was shown giving general information about the Korean War, known widely as the “Forgotten War,” and then ECHS’s own veteran and ROTC instructor Major Merrill spoke about the Frozen Chosen of Korea as well as his personal experiences with war, loss, and the duty of future generations to honor those who serve.
The student body remained reverent and respectful, and many stayed after the end to talk with the Korean War vet, before returning to their classes. Veteran’s Day here at ECHS was a rousing success.
