Every year East Coweta students show up to the homecoming game to support our team, but do they know this history behind Homecoming?

Homecoming games originally come from the idea of inviting alumni back on campus for a football game, but nobody really knows who was the first to call this tradition an official event. One of the most notable early Homecoming football games was the University of Illinois, who were on a losing streak against their rivals.

They invited all their alumni and student body to come to this game and with an audience of 12,000 supporters they claimed their first win in a long time.

While you might think the homecoming game has evolved since its first claims to fame, the principle is still the same: to come support your home football team while it rallies community support for one week out of the year. One major change however, is the homecoming game used to center around the team the school was playing. It was all about the football game, rather than the community. Nowadays the homecoming game is usually played against a team you will likely win against to boost your school spirit.

During a homecoming game, usually the king and queen of homecoming are crowned at halftime. Halftime shows stand out because of their extravagant displays, which add significance. For example the previous homecoming queen always comes back to crown the current queen at our EC games. These lush halftime performances are meant to rally community support and cause students and alumni to feel school spirit and pride in this game. The atmosphere is more jovial and festive because of community support.

EC’s homecoming game is the 27th against Cambridge High School at 7:30 pm. Don’t forget to grab your tickets and show your local team support.
