A new club is giving East Coweta students a chance to step into the world of diplomacy. We are pleased to introduce the Model UN club.

East Coweta High School is starting its own Model UN chapter this school year. The club will give students an opportunity to practice public speaking, research current events, debate ideas, give them a sense of diplomacy, and work with other students to find solutions to complicated problems.

Model United Nations, commonly called Model UN, is dedicated to fostering global awareness, critical thinking, and respectful dialogue among students by simulating the work of the United Nations. Through research, debate, and collaboration, members develop a deeper understanding of international issues, diplomacy, and diverse world perspectives while building skills in public speaking, negotiation, and problem-solving. The club aims to inspire informed, engaged global citizens who are prepared to lead with empathy, integrity, and a commitment to peaceful solutions.

Members will take on the role of representatives from different countries and have to think about issues from their assigned country’s point of view. This can make discussions more challenging because students may have to defend a position they do not personally agree with.

The club will also focus on preparing students for mock conferences and other Model UN activities. Members can expect to research their countries, prepare speeches, participate in discussions, and practice negotiation.

For students who enjoy government, current events, public speaking, or debate, Model UN offers a way to explore those interests outside of the classroom. It can also help students become more comfortable speaking in front of others and working as part of a team, preparing them for the future.

The first meeting of the club began on August 20th of 2026. The founder, Maya Singh and co-founder Sheldon Allen alongside the officers have made their introductions and participated in ice-breaker games. Their sponsor, Gary Loafman has also introduced himself and continues to provide the team with ideas to add to the club. Every meeting will be in room 164.
