This week Smoke Signals asked 95 EC students and teachers: What is one word that comes to mind when you think of October?
The two answers that topped the list were “Halloween” with 27 votes and “Spooky” with 10.
“Spooky:” answered Luz Rathert, “it makes me think of being in a house with all the lights off watching horror movies!”
“Mountains,” was Mrs. Keenan’s response because “we go to the Blue Ridge Mountains every year in the fall.”
“Witches: whenever I think about October,” replied Margaret Cole, “it’s prime witch time because of Halloween and its vibes.”

We expected that Halloween would be one of the top answers as it tends to be a holiday many people look forward to each year. It seems that football, cooler weather, and changing leaves just can’t compete with the spookiness of Halloween!
